Character Design 101
Getting Started:
This page will walk you through the basic steps of designing a character, along with links to other websites/blogs that may give you good character designing tips.
The first thing you need is an idea:
Inspiration is very important when creating a character. An idea is all you need to get started. If you are having a hard time thinking of an idea, check out Pinterest here. There are many other creative people like you with similar interests!
1.
Collect Ideas and Brainstorm:
Brainstorming personality may change or influence the character’s design. It is important to make sure you don’t just focus on the visuals in order to make the character more realistic. For example, if the character is uptight and moody, different colors or visuals may help pull the character together. Check out this website for colors and personality relationships:
2.
Creating your first Visuals:
Creating visuals is always my favorite part of designing a character! Doodling certain poses or emotions on a character bring them to life. When drawing your character, don’t worry about it being a perfect design right away. Many characters go through different phases of design and will likely change a lot before you settle on the final.
3.
Rework Your Design:
First Designs are never stuck in place. You can switch personality, main attributes or even small details. Trying out different things for characters is a good way to help settle on a good design. If you have an idea, but it doesn’t work for the character, you can always keep it for another project.
4.
Finalize Design:
After experimenting a lot with design and personality, you will notice that the design will solidify itself. Congratulations on creating your new character!
